The American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a native North American fruit tree with a wide natural range spanning from Texas and Florida to southern Connecticut. It has been cultivated by Native Americans for its fruit and timber since prehistoric times. This species is also commonly used as rootstock for Asian persimmon varieties due to its disease resistance and tolerance of poor soil and cold temperatures.

About the Fruit:

Fruit is round to oval, pale orange to orange-yellow, 2–6 cm in diameter. Unripe fruit is astringent; flavor improves significantly after frost or partial bletting. Ripe or frost-softened flesh is sweet. Each fruit contains one to eight seeds.

  • Native North American species with wide climate adaptability
  • Cold hardy down to -25°F (-32°C)
  • Drought resistant once established
